Brain Injury Research Efforts

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke:

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke is a part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. It conducts and funds research on brain and nervous system disorders and has a budget of just over US$1.5 billion.

NIH NeuroBioBank (NBB): Since 2013, the NIH NeuroBioBank has catalyzed scientific discovery through the centralization of resources aimed at the collection and distribution of human post-mortem brain tissue. This networked brain and tissue repositories distribute thousands of samples per year to the research community studying neurological, developmental, and psychiatric disorders.

International Initiative for Brain Injury Research (InTBIR): InTBIR is a cooperative effort of the European Commission (EC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to coordinate and leverage clinical research activities on traumatic brain injury (TBI) research.

Common Data Elements (CDEs) project: CDE stands for "Common Data Element." The purpose of the CDE Project is to standardize the collection of investigational data in order to facilitate comparison of results across studies and more effectively aggregate information into significant metadata results.

Federal Interagency Traumatic Brain Injury Research (FITBIR): The Federal Interagency Traumatic Brain Injury Research (FITBIR) informatics system was developed to share data across the entire TBI research field and to facilitate collaboration between laboratories, as well as interconnectivity with other informatics platforms.

The National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR): NIDILRR’s mission is to generate new knowledge and to promote its effective use to improve the abilities of individuals with disabilities to perform activities of their choice in the community, and to expand society’s capacity to provide full opportunities and accommodations for its citizens with disabilities.

The Brain Trauma Foundation (BTF): BTF develops research on traumatic brain injury (TBI) and has expanded to improving the outcome of TBI patients nationwide through working to implement evidence-based guidelines for prehospital and in-hospital care, quality-improvement programs, and coordinating educational programs for medical professionals.
